About UPC Matching

When you’re listing products on Amazon through Omnivore, it’s important to match them to Amazon’s existing catalogue.

If a product has already been listed by someone else using the same UPC (or EAN/JAN/ISBN), Amazon treats it as the same item, so you can’t create a duplicate listing. Omnivore will link your product to that existing listing instead.

What You Need to Know

Amazon verifies all UPCs against the official GS1 database. UPCs that do not match the information provided by GS1 are considered invalid by Amazon.

If your product genuinely doesn’t have a GTIN (UPC, EAN, ISBN, or JAN) and it’s a unique item, you may be eligible to request a GTIN exemption at the brand or SKU level.

Visit How to list products that do not have a GTIN for eligibility information.

Best Practice Steps

  1. Before listing via Omnivore, check if the product already exists on Amazon by searching its UPC or ASIN.

  2. If it does exist, make sure you list against the existing ASIN (Amazon will handle the matching).

  3. If it doesn’t exist and your product has a valid GS1 UPC, you can create a new listing.

  4. If it doesn’t have a valid GTIN and you believe you qualify, apply for a GTIN exemption (in Amazon Seller Central) before uploading via Omnivore.

  5. Use clean, accurate product data and ensure your UPC matches what’s registered with GS1 to avoid listing rejection.
